Here I am right before presenting at the Texas Book Festival in Austin. This Austin 2nd grade class decided to introduce my new book FRED & THE LUMBERJACK by drawing their own "Dream" blueprints. (It's what comes at the end of the book.) (It was pretty amazing.)
Note the Dream Android, Dream Boat, Dream Rocketship and maybe my favorite which you can see below: Dream Treehouse. (I also LOVE the Treehouse books!) The girl on the left is detailing the powers of her Dream Android. That also sounded pretty dope.
One thing that does make hitting the road that crazy amount better are programs like Reading Rockstars run by the Texas Book Festival and the An Open Book Foundation in Washington DC. They are so simple, and so effective:
- Get authors out to schools.
- Have us do our insane song and dance and convince kids that we're real people and they can do this too.
- And then the crazy part...
- GIVE EVERY KID A BOOK. FOR FREE.
Here's some of the kids in DC with their brand new books. (They were really into the ROARRRRR page turn.)
Oh, and I sign each book for each kid too.
My heart melts every time.
And finally, HUGE thanks to Community Bookstore in Park Slope, Brooklyn. What a delightful way start this whole tour off. My daughter loved it! (Or will hold this photo against me forever...)
